When is your 2026 tax return due?

For many business owners, the next tax return in the diary will be the 2026 tax return. Let the below be a handy quick guide to doing your 2026 tax return. The due dates are the same for companies, sole traders and individuals. Although if you’re an individual with a normal job, paying PAYE and have no additional income, your tax return is usually automatically filed with IRD.

What are the 2026 tax return dates?

Tax return filing opens 1 April 2026. The due dates are:

  • 7th July 2026 (without extension)
  • 31st March 2027 (with extension)

Provisional tax:
If you need to pay provisional tax (2025 tax > $5,000) the due dates are as follows:
- 1st Installment: 28 August 2026
- 2nd Installment: 15 January 2027
- 3rd Installment: 7 May 2027

When do you need to file your 2026 New Zealand tax return?

Without extension: Most people won’t have an extension. The due date is 7th July 2026.

With an extension or linked to an accountant or tax agent: The tax return is due by 31st March 2027.

When do you need to pay your 2026 New Zealand tax return?

You will need to have paid this on or before 7th April 2027.
