Many business owners have already done their 2025 tax return, so the next one in the diary will be your 2026 tax return. However if you still need to do yours, the below will be a handy quick guide for your tax returns! To be clear, when we say ‘2026 Tax Return’ we refer to the financial year that ended 31 March 2026 for most businesses. The due dates are the same for companies, sole traders and individuals. Although if you’re an individual with a normal job, paying PAYE and have no additional income, your tax return is usually automatically filed with IRD.

What are the 2026 tax return dates?

The standard due date is: 7 July 2026

With an extension, it’s: 31 March 2027

When do you need to file your New Zealand tax return?

Without extension: Most people won’t have an extension. Your due date was 7th July 2026, so if you have not filed your tax return yet, it is overdue and you need to do this now.

It’s worth knowing that 7th July 2026 was also the due date for some people even if they previously had an extension or are linked to a tax agent (aka accountant) - this will happen if your tax returns were filed late for a few consecutive years.

With an extension or linked to an accountant or tax agent: Your tax return is due by 31st March 2027.

When do you need to pay your 2026 New Zealand tax return?

You will need to have paid this on or before 7th April 2027.
